FREE SPEECH AND JEWISH VALUES
One of the foundational principles of democracy is free speech. Yet some democracies which do not have a constitutional protection for free speech have introduced laws which restrict certain types of expression. Some Jewish groups have supported such restrictions arguing that they are necessary to combat anti-Semitism. What about genuine Jewish values and how can this be resolved. In this lively session David draws on Tanach, Talmud and recent Australian political debates.

ALWAYS TIME TO ADD A WORD, NEVER TIME TO WITHDRAW ONE
Words are powerful! Paul takes us through the historical development of freedom-of-speech in the secular world and reflects on how current thoughts and changes regarding freedom-of-speech are affecting us today. Debunking the idea that freedom-of-speech means anyone, saying anything, at anytime, anywhere, Paul uses the threat of the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) Movement as a case study for how freedom-of-speech shouldn't become a pretext for hate-speech.

HALACHIC APPROACHES TO JEWS WHO ARE TRANSGENDER
What is the halachic response to issues of transgender people? It has been said that whilst the Torah is a Torat emet (a Torah of truth conveyed through laws and values) it is also a Torat chesed (a Torah filled with compassion). The difficulties faced by transgender people, some of them quite young children, are serious. The rate of attempted suicide in transgender people is high – probably around 40%. This presentation will seek to examine some of the issues from both a traditional and progressive halachic perspective.
